Who is Nick Gialias and why is he running for New Hope Borough Council?

Nick Gialias is a candidate for New Borough Council in the election scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 8. This year's polling site has been moved from the Eagle Fire Company building to the New Hope Borough Community Room adjacent to Borough Hall. Gialas will be vying with three other contenders for three open seats on New Hope's top governing body.

A resident of Riverwoods with a wife and young daughter, Gialias, 33, sees himself as a family man and businessman, but his background in biomedical engineering seems to underly the precision of his speech and the directness of his opinions. He owns the Logan Inn, a family business where his father is the chef and other relatives are frequently helping out with the perpetual urgencies that accompany any sprawling inn-restaurant-bar. Gialias is running on the Republican ticket in a town where party affiliations are of dubious concern. He is also known as a primary organizer of the New Hope/Lambertville Friday Night Fireworks.

So, why is Gialias trying to become a member of Borough Council?

"I'm really concerned about the prosperity of New Hope," he said. "I want to help bring it back to the flourishing community we have come to love. We need to bring back some of the institutions that defined New Hope -- the mule barges, Odette's, and the Playhouse, Zadar space and Delaware waterfront in general. There's very little access for residents and guests to view and enjoy the river," added Gialias.

The troubled Bucks County Playhouse is indeed on many residents' minds these days, and the symbolism of its financial plight is not lost on Gialas. "The Playhouse is more than a business issue.They don't appreciate how much the Playhouse means to the residents of New Hope. The bank doesn't care. For the bank, it's just a dollar asset. For us, it's more than that; it's part of our history, culture and identity here."

Gialias' solution to the Bucks County Playhouse fiasco: "We need to go to [Reps.] Bernie O'Neill, Chuck McIlhinney and Mike Fitzpatrick and get them into the process, and see what kind of support we could receive at the county or state level, be it legislative, financial, or public."

Gialas believes the beleaguered Bucks County Playhouse also reflects negatively on New Hope's reputation as a haven for the arts. "We need to encourage the arts, encourage painters and performers on the streets, not require permits. If we're going to say we're an arts community, we've got to bring the Playhouse back -- we've got to put our money where our mouth is."

Likewise, Gialias views reviving the currently dry section of the Delaware Canal running through New Hope as vitally important to the borough's prosperity. "Reviving the canal is about wildlife, tourism, beauty and history. I'd rather people try and fail -- at least you can bring attention to the problem, and you might get lucky and raise enough money to fix it up. You also show people your mind is in the right place," he said.

In terms of the high rate of store closings in New Hope, due in part to the uncertain national economy, Gialias said, "The way you get good shops here is by creating a good environment for them to prosper. Right now, restaurants are providing an important service to the community, which also helps all the shops in the vicinity.

"The businesses are really providing a tax base that keeps taxes lower. The restaurants are paying school tax, but not sending kids to school. People move here for the school system that is paid, in part, by restaurants. Parking meters and fines more than pay for the police. I can't imagine a future New Hope that's prosperous without a flourishing business community. Tourism supports the borough because it keeps taxes lower, supports the schools, and supports the police force."

Added Gialias, "My perspective comes from being a resident here, having a family here, and having a family business here. I want New Hope to do well, and I need New Hope to do well."

But, cautions Gialias, "We should be careful not to lose our sense of small-town community. We need to be treating everyone with dignity, and respect what they bring to the town. And we need to be supporting people who are looking to renovate, restore, and maintain old properties.

"People that scrape and paint their houses every year should be praised, and not criticized if it's not the exact right color. Sometimes we get off track with that," continued Gialias.

And what difference can one Borough Council member make?

Says Gialias, "I will try to better inform the public about the major issues in town and get them involved in the process. We all want New Hope to continue being a great, lively, vibrant place where we can bring our family, friends, and relatives."

Alluring Moon jewelry store and studio is open for business, designing, handcrafting, and selling unique jewelry, including gold and diamond nose rings, belly rings and earrings.

Founded in 2002 by partners and co-owners Carolyn and Ellie Stutzman, Alluring Moon began as an online business. After exploring much of the country, they "fell in love with New Hope's artistic vibe, friendly people, and the serene beauty of the Delaware River and surrounding countryside."

Carolyn and Ellie decided to moved from Seattle to New Hope and open a jewelry shop. Ellie is Alluring Moon's principle designer, while goldsmiths Carolyn and Kara bring Ellie's designs to life in their workshop to the rear of of the store.

The main focus at Alluring Moon clearly is the fun, high-end selection of body jewelry, but the premium ancient coin pendants and precious gemstone rings are eye-catching and top-quality, as well. Diamonds and gems seem vibrant in creative settings, and all jewelry is handcrafted with nickel-free solid gold or pure platinum, then hand polished for high luster.

Despite the posh feel, folks there seem welcoming and down-to-earth. Alluring Moon is located at 9 W. Bridge St.

Lambertville residents wonder if flood surge during hurricane was man-made disaster

Rumors were swirling in Lambertville today like the muddy waters of the Delaware River. The question on everyone's mind: was a "wall of water" which struck several streets there during the height of Hurricane Irene caused or exacerbated by a release of water at a reservoir overlooking the city?

While Lambertville received an unprecedented amount of rainfall during Hurricane Irene, with flash flooding heavy there, multiple accounts from residents living on Ferry, Swan, South Union and North Franklin streets point to an as of yet unexplained incident that occurred early Sunday morning.

Said one Swan Street resident, "It was 12:40 a.m. and I heard my sump pump turn on. I went down to the basement, and a window blew out and water rushed in. I ran for my car, but it was already half under water. Ten minutes later the water began receding."

A long-time resident of North Franklin Street who asked not to be identified said the incident on her block started after midnight and lasted about half an hour. "I've never seen this block flood in 50 years," she recalled. North Franklin Street is located at Lambertville's eastern section, far from the Delaware River, but below the dam operated by United Water.

In a press release issued Aug. 30, United Water said, "On already saturated ground, Lambertville received an unprecedented seven and one-half inches (7 ½”) of rain in 18 hours on Saturday and Sunday. During the storm event, the company issued a precautionary dam warning. This triggers notifications to the local offices of emergency management so they can implement their emergency response plans."

The company release went on to say, "The NJDEP [New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection] authorized voluntary water discharge to protect the dams. This included releasing water prior to rain events which limited the impact on down-stream lower Lambertville during the storm. The company also worked closely with the local emergency management team staying in constant contact throughout the storm event."

A spokesperson for United Water New Jersey was unable to be reached.

Asked whether the "mystery surge" of water that terrorized residents and businesses was caused solely by flash flooding associated with Hurricane Irene, Lambertville Mayor David DelVecchio said, "We don't have all the facts yet. I've asked our engineer to request more details in writing from United Water."

Meanwhile, residents all over Lambertville were asking the same questions Thursday: "Exactly what time did the 'voluntary water discharge' take place?" "Why weren't residents warned in advance?"

Said one former fire official who asked to remain anonymous, "I've heard that maybe the dam operator didn't empty the water before the rainfall, then did it during the Hurricane, and couldn't close the vents."

All unsubstantiated, but in the absence of hard facts, and with many residents and businesses uncovered by insurance and struggling to recover, the details surrounding Lambertville's "mystery surge" remain as muddy and clouded as the nearby Delaware River.

Blue Penguin frozen yogurt shop latest entrant into New Hope's ice cream wars

New Hope is famous for many things, but no one can deny that ice cream is king and competition is fierce. Gerenser's deserves much of the credit, with its pioneering gourmet "exotic" flavors, and survives as a popular establishment to this day. Clusters Bucks County Caramel Corn on West Bridge Street offers gelato, Last Temptation offers the creamy, super-premium Thomas Sweet, and even Little China restaurant has a small freezer with Good Humor bars of dubious age.

Enter Blue Penguin at 15 E. Bridge St., a location that has been home to more than one failed ice cream enterprise. Yes, they're cleaning up during the borough's Friday Night Fireworks shows, but can they survive having opened late in the busy season and with cooler weather just around the corner?

Manager Sang H. Lee thinks so. "We opened later to get it right," he said.

And Blue Penguin's business plan factors in an eight-month selling season at best. So, what's their model for success? Lee believes that having "complete control over the product" will insure quality, while the self-serve model offers simplicity.

He seems spot on with regard to the latter. The customer experience is simple and fun, judging from the random reactions of those trying the product. One simply grabs a cup, pours in frozen yogurt from a wall mounted dispenser, then adds toppings. The finished yogurt snack is then weighed at the checkout counter. Prices typically range in the $3-$4 area, and can easily top $6 if one goes crazy with some of the 36 toppings. And what toppings they are: from pitted cherries, berries, melon and other fruit to chocolate chunks, Rainbow Rice Krispies, nuts, and sprinkles.

The 12 basic yogurt flavors themselves were varied and luscious. One young woman was gushing over her Georgia Peach, and a six-year-old boy went bonkers over Red Velvet Cake, although Lee says Cookies n' Cream has proven the most popular flavor among customers thus far.

So, can Blue Penguin be a major player in the battle to win over New Hope's ice cream lovers?

"This is yogurt, not ice cream," said one outspoken customer from Toms River. "It has healthy bacteria, less fat and tastes great. I'll be back."

My My boutique hits New Hope

Maureen Ferguson has moved her retail showcase of independent artists, crafters, and vintage clothing from Doylestown to New Hope, and West Ferry Street may never be the same.

In fact, the retail-challenged street once known as "Antiques Row" has shown signs of life lately, not only with the opening of My My, but also the advent of Little Barn Antiques next door and the expansion of Sally Goodman Antiques further up the hill.

Ferguson seems charming, intelligent and understated, as are her offerings. She believes that her tagline speaks for itself: "handmade. vintage. awesome."

Prices start at around $6 for a bar of handmade soap. Of note were the vintage fabrics, radio collection, and newsprint flower sculptures. The space is airy and inviting.

Towpath House in New Hope may go condo

The restaurant portion of the five-building complex bordered by the Ingham Creek, Delaware Canal and West Mechanic Street is now called 'Tuscany', and before that it was 'Esca', but most still remember it as the 'Towpath House'. It sat directly across the canal from Johnny Francis' Canal House, and at one time both were bustling nightly with large, loyal crowds.

The Canal House and adjacent businesses are long gone, and in their place stands builder George Michael's largely unfinished and unoccupied townhouse complex overlooking the dry, crumbling Delaware Canal.

And now Towpath landowner Paul Licitra has indicated to Borough Hall that he will be submitting a sketch plan for Borough Council to review at their August meeting -- a plan widely expected to take the form of a residential development.

Licitra confirmed that conversion of the property from mixed use to residential is being contemplated.

"I can't provide much detail at this early stage, but I can say that we intend to improve the property and make it an asset to the neighborhood," he said.

New Hope's Annapurna fills local Indian restaurant void

Annapurna sits at the back of the Four Seasons Mall in New Hope, a location that once made up part of the sizable and popular Toys for Men shop. There are now windows in the rear offering Delaware River views courtesy of a prior restaurant's effort, but unlike that establishment, this one has a crack at succeeding.

A recent visit to Annapurna revealed clean, tasteful decor, a classic selection of Indian cuisine, and friendly, efficient service. The details: to start, one won't find unusual, fiery regional dishes. And that may be a good thing. It seems that while some local palettes might be accustomed to Thai cooking, far fewer are familar with the culinary joys of the subcontinent.

Annapurna manages to cover all the bases in a pleasing, authentic way. Appetizers include the standard pakoras and samosas tastefully rendered, and the bread selection focused on interesting varieties of naan. Prices were moderate, with many entrees in the $12-15 range, including tandoori, curry, masala, korma and biryani dishes. The vegetarian selection was sizable and varied.

Standouts included the chicken tikka masala (cooked in a mild, but well-seasoned tomato and cream sauce), and the shrimp vindaloo, which had an abundanance of medium shrimp in a wonderfully seasoned curry sauce that made up in flavor what it lacked in heat. In fact, should one be an experienced fan of Indian cuisine, informing the waiter that one's dish can be prepared on the hot side would not be out of order.

The service was excellent; our waiter offered extra helpings of basmati rice and chutneys. Fresh coriander was in the air, and the entrees weren't swimming in ghee. The river view added to the overall experience. We'll be back.

A great introduction to Indian food for everyone that can also be enjoyed by experienced afficiandados. BYOB and take-out avaialble.

New owners to convert large New Hope retail space into Italian restaurant

A local partnership, 46 North Main Associates, LLC, is taking over the property located at that address in New Hope and seeking permission to convert it into a restaurant featuring homemade pasta, pizza and fine Italian entrees at what owners say will be moderate prices.

At 7,000 square feet, the space formerly occupied by the Trading Post of Bucks County seems ideal to create the type of airy, almost opulent decor for which co-owner Antonio Adragna is known. His Cafe Antonio in Morrisville has a loyal following, traditional Italian menu, and an impressive interior featuring soaring ceilings, chandeliers, and charming murals.

Says Lambertville resident and partner Glenn Kapuscienski, "We want to combine the energy of New Hope with fine Italian dining on the riverfront."

Blueprints for the planned restaurant feature two prominent bar areas, and a rumor has circulated among some concerned homeowners in New Hope's largely quiet north end that a nightclub or bar might be in the works.

But the owners say they're interested in gaining the community's respect and loyalty as a fine dining venue. "New Hope is a wonderful historic town with diversity and a flair for the arts," said Kapuscienski. "We intend to be a friendly neighbor and a complement to the community."

Cloudy skies Saturday did not dim the enthusiasm at the New Hope Celebrates Pride Parade, this year kicked off with a well-received address by former U.S. Congressman Patrick Murphy.

Dubbed "Freedom to Be", the spirited march was the main event in a week-long celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and allied community. The parade also featured marching bands, spectacular floats, and talented entertainers, along with friends and families of the LGBT community.

Murphy addressed the cheering parade audience and then joined in the march with his family. The former congressman is popular in the LGBT community, having helped pave the way in the U.S. House of Representatives for the successful repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law which forced gays and lesbians to remain silent in order to serve in the military.

"Today is a great day to celebrate what makes America the best country in the world," said Murphy, a former captain in the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army who saw combat in Bosnia and Iraq.

New Hope Fantasy Renaissance Faire returns to West Mechanic Street this weekend, rain or shine

The New Hope Fantasy Renaissance Faire returns to Mechanic Street this weekend, a fitting locale as the event was born on this storied street, and many local denizons need not alter their daily clothing routine to fit right into the medieval themed street happening.

Remember, this is New Hope, so don't expect a genteel affair featuring jousting for maidens and high tea. Think more Pirates of the Caribbean, and you'll be closer to home. Among the entertainers are Unholy Sideshoe (leave the kiddies behind for this one), Lords of Adventure, Pinklefoot Adventure Show, Terra Serpentis, Mery Music Makers and Four Pices of Eight, along with a Shakespeare the Bard Faire, blacksmithing demos, belly dancing and a book signing.

Popular retail venues Medieval Gallery and Against the Grain will be heavily represented at the event, as owner Mike McManus once again provides support and organization for the event.

The fair is the brainchild of the late Dan Henley, a ruddy, gray-bearded giant of a man who was often seen stringing beads in front of Mechanic Street Mugs during the tourist season. "Dan can't be with us this year, but the event's growing popularity is a tribute to his love for Renaissance fairs and street events," said Joel Roberts, owner of Mechanic Street Mugs. "We've got some great stores, restaurants and galleries on the block and they're all ready to roll out the red carpet for our visitors."

The New Hope Fantasy Renaissance Faire starts at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday on West Mechanic Street, rain or shine, admission free of charge.

New Hope gets a karate school

Well it took long enough, but New Hope finally has a dedicated karate school or, in this case, dojang of its own.

In recent years, karateka had to seek study in nearby towns like Lambertville and Buckingham, but now locals can receive bona fide martial arts instruction at the Logan Square Shopping Center in a large, new facility adjacent to New Hope Beverage (itself a worthwhile destination, with a large selection a value priced imported, domestic and micro-brewed beer).

New Hope Karate offers traditional Tang Soo Do, mixed martial arts, kickboxing, self defense and even classes taught in Spanish. Also of note is the Parent's Night Out program, which allows moms and dads the opportunity to drop off kids aged 5-12 for a few hours of fun, including karate, movies and other supervised activities.

Owner and head instructor Robert Reynolds is no stranger to the area or martial arts community. He ran Reynold's Karate and Fitness for many years in Lambertville, and was known on the tournament circuit as a formidable fighter and champion. Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art that places a somewhat greater emphasis on hand techniques than the popular Tae Kwon Do, and also derives much of its kinetic power from hip rotation, not unlike its Japanese and Okinawan counterparts. This makes the art an easier fit for those students coming to train with previous experience in styles like Shotokan and Goju-Ryu.

Reynolds also enjoys an excellent reputation as an instructor for children, an important membership and financial component for any successful dojo, but this latest offering is more well-rounded with the addition of specialized adult classes, like those featuring the highly effective Israeli Krav Maga self defense system.

Those interesed in seeing New Hope's new martial arts facilty and viewing some "Little Ninjas" (and not-so-little ninjas) in actiion are welcome to view classes in the morning (around 9:30 a.m. to noon) and evening (4:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.) Reynolds says the first week is always free if one choses to sign up, and I'll take him at his word -- this guy's the real deal.

Local rock band to perform benefit concert for New Hope-Solebury High School classmate and leukemia research

New Hope band JC Satellite will perform "A Concert for Carly - Destroy Leuk" on Saturday, March 5 to raise awareness and money for Acute Myeloid Leukemia Research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Three of the four bandmembers are classmates at New Hope-Solebury High School of Carly Stephens, who was diagnosed with leukemia in July, 2010.

Radio deejay "Spike" from Philadelphia's WYSP 94.1 FM will emcee the concert, which also includes an opening performance by singer/songwriter Kelly Carvin and special guest Gabby D'Angelo, another classmate from New Hope-Solebury High School.

Doors to the concert will open at 7 p.m. at the Eagle Fire Hall, 46 N. Sugan Road in New Hope. Tickets are priced at $12 and available at the JC Satellite website.

Those who can't attend may make a donation to AML Research at the Childrens' Hospital giving page.

St. Martin of Tours Church in New Hope may close school

Rumors are flying among parents of children enrolled at St. Martin of Tours School in New Hope that the institution is closing.

St. Martin of Tours School is a private Catholic elementary school serving students of all denominations from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade.

Some speculate that low enrollment may be the cause. Other parents are wondering how a potential closure might affect enrollment figures at New Hope-Solebury schools, although several parents have said on a popular local Facebook site that they would move their children to other area Catholic schools if necessary.

School teachers and staff there seem well-liked by students and parents, some of whom say they are still fighting to keep the school open.

A church spokesperson contacted Sunday confirmed the move was under consideration, but said, "The final word will come from the Cardinal within two weeks."

New Hope tries to dig out

New Hope did its collective best Thursday to dig out from the massive double-punch storm that dumped more than a foot of heavy, wet snow on the borough.

Residents complained of shoveling for two hours or more merely to unbury cars and clean front sidewalks of homes, and state workers seemed hard pressed to clear the numerous canal bridges in town.

By mid-afternoon, several sections of sidewalk downtown remained unpassable, although many strollers appeared to have stayed home, as streets were nearly empty of foot traffic.

But locals were sure to continue digging out and sprucing up for the busy Winter Festival weekend just ahead.

New Hope Zoning Hearing Board to weigh proposed new housing development across from high school

The Zoning Hearing Board of New Hope will consider in the weeks ahead a proposal by Rebecca River Road, LLC President J. Robert Hillier of Princeton to build a residential development at 181 W. Bridge St., a 4.6 acre parcel directly opposite New Hope-Solebury High School.

The property contains a 9,500 square foot main house known as the 'Cintra Mansion' built in 1816 and historically registered. That building is flanked by two cottages, and backed by a barn now used as an apartment building.

All in all, there are currently 13 apartments -- three in separate cottages, eight in the existing structure, and two in Cintra that are now vacant.

Said Nina Burns of Weidel New Hope, broker for the deal, "The proposed buyer/owner has presented a fabulous plan to restore and renovate the Cintra property. He is definitely someone who knows how to restore old buildings yet bring full charisma to the area and best of all to the people of the community."

One area resident familar with zoning issues said he found the proposed project to be innovative, particularly in its use of advanced drainage techniques to ameliorate impermeable surface impacts, and in its preservation of existing trees (said to have already been measured and tagged).

Another resident who asked to remain anonymous asserted that requested variances pertaining to density of units within a given lot size, conversion of housing units deemed to be of historic value, and parking in front of historic structures, might draw scrutiny.

Under the current proposal, the parcel of land will be divided into two parts: the first lot, situated at the north end of the property, measures 1.5 acres and will be contributed by the builder to the New Hope-Solebury Library as a site for an expanded location with parking.

The second lot contains the proposed "Joseph Stanley" development that involves the restoration of the Cintra Mansion, cottages and barn for residential occupancy, essentially adding 16 new units to the existing 13 for a total of 29 residential condominiums.

Second bailout group pledges return of New Hope's Bucks County Playhouse to 'glory days'

W. Paul Beckwith of New Hope announced at Tuesday night's Borough Council meeting that he and a private foundation are mounting a rival effort to rescue and restore the foreclosed Bucks County Theater.

Broadway producer Jed Bernstein and a pair of local residents had announced in December their formation of a "Bucks County Playhouse Conservancy," but that group appears somewhat adrift, according to sources close to the organization.

In a statement read in his absence by an associate, Beckwith said that his group's intention was to return the Playhouse to "its glory days and advance the program offerings to include opera, symphony, professional theater, [and] productions by local individuals and groups."

Beckwith said that the group is developing a plan through the established New Hope Arts organization to convert the Playhouse into a "not for profit venue" through "the generosity of a private foundation."

The plan envisions an "outlet" at the Playhouse site that will serve "the good people of New Hope/Lambertville as well as the surrounding area" and become "a pivotal performing arts center for all to enjoy."

Added Beckwith in his statement, "What is important to note is that steps are being taken to develop a program for the Playhouse to ensure that the coming season presents a vital and entertaining program while the plan moves forward."

He urged patience on the part of concerned residents and groups, citing "complexities" arising from the controversial series of events leading to the Playhouse's recent closure.

But, pledged Beckwith, "The project deserves and will receive a solid financial, legal, and executable plan to keep the Playhouse pertinent for generations to come.

Second group emerges to save Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope

A new group has formed to save the foreclosed Bucks County Playhouse and is making a serious move to purchase the famous structure, according to multiple sources close to the situation.

The move comes at a time when the Doylestown-based Bucks County Playhouse Conservancy, founded by Peggy McRae and backed by the Heritage Conservancy of Doylestown, local lawyer Rick Appel, and Broadway producer Jed Bernstein, have announced their own rescue plan for the Playhouse, seized by lender Stoneridge Bank on Dec. 22.

Said Bernstein last week, “The entire theatre community was aghast at the idea of permanently losing this legendary venue and picturesque piece of theatre history.”

But substantial funding from Bernstein and his Broadway associates has not yet materialized, according to sources familiar with the organization, and the group appears adrift, only recently receiving non-profit certification and attempting to shed its somewhat enigmatic aura.

Enter the new Playhouse rescue group -- one which is "serious and not about to be beaten," according to an individual involved who asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity of the situation. This latest, New Hope-based group is also non-profit, and intends to keep the Playhouse a performing arts center as part of a complete waterfront revival effort.

Importantly, say sources, the new group is well-funded and moving forward decisively.

Comment from the Bucks County Playhouse Conservancy was not immediately available.

The Stoneridge Bank of Skippack seized back control of the Bucks County Playhouse after no bids for the property materialized at Friday morning's sheriff sale.

Ralph Miller, controversial owner of the New Hope landmark, said yesterday that he was relinquishing ownership of the property.

Miller has been running the theater since 1977, and owed the Stonebridge Bank more than $2 million. Spokespersons for the bank did not return phone calls requesting information.

The Playhouse had been slated for sheriff sale Nov. 12, but received a reprieve until Dec. 10. The "sale adjournment" requesting a delay was submitted by an attorney with Philadelphia law firm Fox Rothchild on behalf of Stonebridge Bank of Skippack, filings show.

As previously reported, a group of concerned citizens and civic leaders has been formed and held meetings with additional parties in an attempt to preserve the historic structure as a performance outlet.

A call to the Playhouse ticket office revealed that seats were still being sold for A Christmas Carol, which is running through Dec. 23, but website links to purchase 2011 tickets appeared not to be working.

Opposition mounting to proposed shopping center in Solebury

As area real estate developers seek approval to build another shopping center in Solebury adjacent to the existing Logan Square commercial complex, the township's Zoning Hearing Board continues to deliberate in secret, and opposition from nearby residents and environmental groups grows.

The proposed commercial development would include a gas station run by nearby Giant Food, a bank, a pharmacy, a chain-style family restaurant, a Dunkin' Donuts and other businesses where the local nightclub Cartwheel once operated before being severely damaged by a 2005 fire.

That space was bought by Penns' Grant Corp., whom will work with with New Cartwheel Partners, which in turn shares interlocking executives with Logan Square owners Solebury Partners Ltd. The consortium is talking to another new commercial center based around the defunct banquet hall Fountainhead, also once ravaged by fire, which already has needed approvals for a new hotel and banquet location.

While the location is already zoned for commercial use, developers require approval of 15 or more zoning variances, including one to construct nearly 400 new parking spaces.

Speaking of the proposed shopping center, concerned Solebury citizen Chris Caputo puts it plainly: "We just don't need it. Residents don't want another traffic light on Route 202, they don't want more chain stores, they're concerned about the look and aesthetics of the area, and about the potential effect on water depletion and potential water pollution.

"This project is the most critical development in Solebury Township and is irreversible, so the decision requires significant thought and public input before it should move forward," Caputo added.

Caputo has collected more than 350 signatures in opposition to the proposed development and plans to present them at the Dec. 21 Solebury Board of Supervisors meeting where the the determination by the Zoning Hearing Board will be heard.

Solebury resident and petition signatory Soren Giese said, "The Cartwheel project will require a record 16 variances to existing ordinances to be completed as proposed. It seems that the developers are turning the process on its head by trying to retrofit current zoning ordinances to comply with their proposal rather than coming forward with a plan that is in alignment with the requirements set forth by the township."

All that we ask is for the township to apply the ordinances as written. We feel that this is the best way to protect our community while at the same time allowing development of those areas designated for this purpose," added Giese.

New Hope resident Terry Marks said of the project, "I'm okay with it as long as there is safe ingress and egress, with a new traffic light at the entrance...but do we need another drug store or another Dunkin' Donuts one half mile from the one on Main and Bridge streets? A gas station that doesn't gouge us with ridiculous prices would be welcome, though."

Joni Lefkowitz-Glassman, owner of the Dunkin' Donuts location in New Hope, commented on the new location she intends to add at the former Cartwheel site: "A Dunkin Donuts WITH a drive thru, may I add! Always a good thing when in a rush or in bad weather!"

Area environmentalists are also weighing in on the proposed development. Said Les Isbrandt, former President of the New Hope Historical Society and current head of the Aquetong Watershed Association, "The Aquetong is a beautiful, high quality watershed. When something like this comes along, let's do it right.

"We want to protect the watershed for all of us," he continued.

"It's not just a small step, it has major consequences -- for land use, water, and traffic -- what do Solebury and New Hope gain by this going in? Change is inevitable, but is this change for the better?" asked Isbrandt.

He and other environmentalists are especially concerned about construction of a gas station just a few hundred feet uphill from the Aquetong Creek.

Said one Solebury environmentalist, "When it comes to petroleum products, there's no margin for error."

And impermeable surfaces like parking lots and restaurants also may cause runoff into the already threatened watershed, from which existing municipal wells draw significant amounts of water for sale back to homeowners.

Isbrandt is also concerned by the Zoning Hearing Board's decision to "close the record" at its last meeting and the public's right to input on the board's decision which it says it will render by Dec. 10, a worry echoed by Caputo.

"We were told at the meeting that there will be no further objections and questions," Caputo said.

Another Solebury resident interviewed said that his family hadn't received notice from the township of the zoning meeting in question, as has traditionally been the case.

Peter Augenblick, Chairman of Solebury's Board of Supervisors disagreed that inadequate notice of the zoning meeting pertaining to the proposed shopping center had occurred, saying "We sent notices to contiguous property owners, and all township meetings are listed on our website."

Augenblick went on to explain,"Part of the zoning procedure is considered legal testimony, and they have to close debate off at some point. They are a legally independent organization -- they have their own solicitor. We have no idea where they are in the decision making process. They might be requesting time on Dec. 21 or maybe later, we don't know.

"We try not to interfere. Zoning is a long way from getting [their decision] to us yet. But we're the final step. Solebury is not closing the record; we continue to welcome questions and opinions from residents on this issue," he added.

"The Supervisors have already looked at the issue of commercial zoning, but zoning is like cheese; eventually it all goes bad," pointed out Augenblick.

When asked if the proposal's progress was a sign of a political shift by the current board shift away from conservation and towards commercial growth, Augenblick said, "Absolutely not. This is the biggest thing right now in Solebury and everybody knows it."

Still, residents and environmental groups are worried that approval of the proposed Cartwheel complex will form the precedent for unbridled commercial development of Route 202 all the way to nearby Lahaska.

"This development will be the first step to transform our community into another Flemington, Warrington or any other place where strip malls and chain restaurants have taken over," said Giese.

Answers Augenblick, "The Board of Supervisors does not want Route 202 to look like Flemington."

Meanwhile, community leader Caputo continues to urge "residents concerned about the project to attend and speak up at the Solebury township supervisors' meeting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 21 at the Solebury Township building."

The trout have died in Primrose Creek.

The creek originates near Solebury Village, and meets the Delaware River at Phillips Mill, a hamlet steeped in local art history and the site of a Colonial-era mill powered by the creek. The waterway is important not only due to its historical and artistic value but also because it sustains local flora and fauna. Virtually every home in the area depends on the creek as a water source, as do wetlands, fish, birds, and plants.

Two years ago, New Hope Crushed Stone and Lime submitted a request to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) to excavate an additional 50 feet deeper at their quarry at the corner of River and Phillips Mill roads.

At that time, the growing number of lost wells, sink holes, and dry sections of Primrose Creek galvanized Solebury residents, officials, and environmental groups to speak up in opposition to the request, which is still pending before the PADEP.

"The mining activities of New Hope Crushed Stone have resulted in decreased ground water elevations and altered flow patterns throughout much of the Primrose Creek watershed and beyond its boundaries," said the township. "Consequently, many residents have had to lower their well pumps, deepen their wells, or replace their wells."

Solebury Township went on to say that "removing the Primrose Creek stream channel on the quarry property and pumping ground water down to greater than 100 feet below sea level in the quarry pit has caused many major problems for home and property owners in the area" including damage to "potable supply wells" along with "land erosion, impacted fish community and aquatic ecology, damaged wetlands and water pollution."

Other area environmental groups like the Primrose Creek Watershed Association, Bucks County Trout Unlimited, the Delaware Riverkeeper, the Delaware River Basin Commission, and the Aquetong, Paunacussing and Pidcock Creek watershed associations, are also concerned about damage from the quarry.

Kevin Morrissey, head of the Primrose Creek Watershed Association, explained that there has been a significant amount of analysis performed by Solebury Township consultants and the PADEP Aquatic Biology Unit in Norristown in recent years. "These studies have concluded that the quarry is taking more than their fair share of water resources," he said. "The experts have determined that this is an unsustainable condition that will continue to get worse.

"Some individuals have expressed the opinion that the mining interests in this state will overshadow other higher priority concerns such as the right of residents to have a safe and healthy environment for themselves and their children," added Morrissey.

"Our Association believes that the strong support shown by Chuck McIlhinney (R-Bucks and Mongomery) and Bernie O’Neill (R-Bucks) for our efforts will communicate to the DEP Secretary and others in Harrisburg that the security of Pennsylvania residents takes precedence over an aging quarry," he continued.

Operations began in the quarry in the 1940s, and groundwater withdrawals began to increase in order to keep the quarry pit dry. In 1998, say environmentalists and Solebury Township, the Primrose Creek stream channel was removed on the quarry property with PADEP knowledge.

Ironically, in May 2009 a PADEP Aquatic Biology Unit study concurred with Solebury Township’s own study, detailing quarry effects like dewatering, sedimentation and erosion. One year later, the PADEP placed the Primrose Creek on the endangered list.

Environmental groups say they're concerned by the quarry's estimated average water consumption of three million gallons per day, which they believe is drawn from the Primrose and Aquetong watersheds and is ultimately expelled along with sediment into the Delaware River.

Said a Solebury resident living about one mile from the quarry, "Our well hasn't been affected yet, but our windows rattle with each blast on Wednesday mornings, our lawn is beginning to show waves and swells, and tree roots are suddenly being exposed."

Mining is big business in Pennsylvania, and while the Norristown office of the PADEP has confirmed that environmental damage has been caused by New Hope Crushed Stone, the department's Pottsville "Mining" office seems to enjoy a somewhat cozy relationship with the industry. In fact, mining has been designated by the PADEP as an "Industry of the Future", and "is important to Pennsylvania's economy and the needs and interests of PA's mining industry intersect significantly with the visions and roadmaps the mining industry developed with the Department of Energy’s Office of Industrial Technologies."

According to the U.S. Geological survey, Pennsylvania produces about $2 billion worth of coal annually, and nonfuel mineral production, including crushed stone and lime, accounts for more than $1 billion in annual production in the state.

So, after two years of weighing the quarry's request to dig even deeper, where does the PADEP now stand on the documented damage to the Primrose Creek and nearby wells, the formation of sink holes, and killing of local wildlife, and what are the department's planned next steps and overall position on the quarry and its continuing activities?

Says a PADEP spokesperson in a statement, "In touching base with our Watershed Management and Mining staff, I confirmed that we are still reviewing all the information and are discussing the matter with Solebury School officials and the quarry operator. Our mining folks advise that there have been no recent water losses noted."

The Solebury School?

Officials at the Solebury School acknowledged discussions with PADEP but declined any further comment. The prestigious private school is situated in close proximity to the quarry and neighbors say sink holes have appeared on its grounds.

And while Solebury Township may have once been in the vanguard of the fight for protection of its residents and land, including undertaking studies, legal action, and publicizing environmental concerns extensively on its Web site, the township now seems to be backing away from its prior commitment to resolving the overall quarry issue rapidly, say local environmentalists and political observers.

Some speculate that the results of last year's Board of Supervisors election may have tipped the balance of that group's composition in a manner detrimental to environmental concerns. Others familiar with the situation speculate that Solebury's budget is coming under pressure, and the township is now placing a higher priority on land development and growth of its tax base, as evidenced by the recent proposal for expanded commercial development near Logan Square.

Top Solebury officials did not respond to requests to be interviewed for this article.

Unfortunately, a geographic fault line connects the Aquetong Watershed to the quarry in question, say area conservationists. And that means New Hope and its water supply may be imperiled next as the PADEP lets its decision making process drag on.

As author Norman Maclean once said, "Eventually all things merge into one and a river runs through it."

Meanwhile, the trout are gone from what's left of Primrose Creek, its silty water flowing inexorably toward the Delaware River.

Quarry Quagmire: Fast, loud trucks are tip of iceberg say area groups, public officials

As previously reported, complaints persist of noisy, high-speed dump trucks and vans crossing over double yellow lines into opposite lanes, bumping or climbing curbs, bounding at high speed over quaint country bridges, and making loud, abrupt stops and turns along Route 32, or "River Road", as it is called in New Hope and surrounding areas.

One challenge is that while the drive leading from New Hope is considered one of the most beautiful in the country, the width of the highway also varies tremendously, often narrowing to almost a single lane in some sections, as it winds through historic towns and over aging bridges to the north and south. Additionally, driving on River Road through New Hope for some truckers is a way to avoid paying the toll at the Route 202 bridge crossing the Delaware River back to New Jersey.

Complicating the situation, River Road becomes Main Street in New Hope, and the same highway is suddenly shared with metered parking spaces, sidewalks crowded with visitors, and aging roadbeds and bridges.

Said State Representative Bernie O’Neill (R-Bucks), "My wife and I recently had dinner outside at the Logan Inn and counted the number of trucks going by -- there were a lot more than you'd expect."

Representative O'Neill, along with State Senator Charles "Chuck" McIlhinney (R-Bucks and Montgomery) and others, have been instrumental in helping the New Hope Residents Association implement a weight limit on the Rabbit Run Bridge and reduce speed limits from 35 miles per hour to 25 at the northern and southern edges of the borough on Route 32.

Jim and Kathy Lyons of New Hope formed the group a few years ago to generate awareness about the noise, excessive speed and shear amount of trucks coming through the borough daily, many of them originating from the New Hope Crushed Stone quarry several miles north at River and Phillips Mill roads, they say.

The group first surveyed the number of trucks coming through New Hope daily on their way to and from the quarry, and produced a petition signed by over 400 residents protesting the amount of quarry truck traffic, speeding, and noise. The association then presented the petition and supporting information at New Hope Borough Council meetings, and met with successive local law enforcement administrations. "New Hope Borough Council gave us great support," says Jim Lyons.

But, still, the flow of loud, dusty, fast-moving trucks runs unabated to this day.

While localities like New Hope and Solebury are limited under state law from using radar-based speed detection equipment, Solebury Police have run unannounced joint truck checkpoints with State Police and seen some success, although communication between trucks drivers can be rapid in these situations, say those familiar with the industry.

And some municipalities in Pennsylvania have successfully moved to limit "Jake braking", or the use of compression release engine brakes by trucks, because they can produce an exceptionally loud, stacatto noise not unlike that of an amplified machine gun.

Nearby Lambertville has succeeded in virtually banning gravel trucks from its riverside road, Route 29, but only after a tragic accident there.

State Senator Chuck McIlhinney (R-Bucks and Montgomery) pulled no punches in saying he doesn't want that to happen on this side of the river.

"I've long been an advocate of moving trucks off of local roads," he said.

"River Road should be a scenic road and not a road used to avoid tolls by trucking companies. These trucks are putting wear and tear on roads and bridges never meant for it," he added.

Perhaps even more ominous is what officials in Solebury Township have been saying about "the environmental impacts of New Hope Crushed Stone quarry".

"The mining activities of New Hope Crushed Stone have resulted in decreased ground water elevations and altered flow patterns throughout much of the Primrose Creek watershed and beyond its boundaries. Consequently, many residents have had to lower their well pumps, deepen their wells, or replace their wells," says the township.

Other area grassroots organizations and environmental groups like the Primrose Creek Watershed Association, Bucks County Trout Unlimited, the Delaware Riverkeeper, the Delaware River Basin Commission, and the Aquetong, Paunacussing and Pidcock Creek watershed associations, are monitoring the situation.

Public information provided by Solebury Township indicates that "removing the Primrose Creek stream channel on the quarry property and pumping ground water down to greater than 100 feet below sea level in the quarry pit has caused many major problems for home and property owners in the area" including damage to "potable supply wells" along with "land erosion, impacted fish community and aquatic ecology (trout, once numerous in the Primrose Creek, are no longer present), damaged wetlands and water pollution."

It gets worse: "A scientifically-based sampling and review of the Primrose Watershed characteristics in comparison to very similar areas in Aquetong Watershed is needed to ensure PADEP will regulate the quarry in a manner that does not impact the quality of life of the residents, as well as preserve and protect our natural resources."

Translation: Our neighbors to the south should keep one eye on their water supply and the other on the State Department of Environmental Protection because New Hope's next.

Says Lyons, "The situation at the New Hope Crushed Stone quarry is an environmental accident waiting to happen, if it has not already begun. The deeper the quarry is allowed to blast down, the void that it creates must be displaced with ground water due to the huge depth.

"The PA Department of Environmental Protection has allowed the quarry to continue. Where is this water coming from? Where are three million gallons of water a day going? The question really is: 'Department of Environmental Protection' --what 'protection'?” he continued.

New Hope Police extend Prescription Drug Take-Back program

The New Hope Police Department will offer another chance for the public to dispose of unused and/or expired prescription drugs this Saturday from 10-2 in the lobby of Borough Hall, located in the former St. Martin of Tours Church at the corner of New and West Mechanic streets.

Experts say that prescription medicines have become an expanding area of drug abuse, with pain killers like Oxycontin leading the way. And, obviously, many commonly prescribed drugs can be hazardous to children who may find them, often having been forgotten and left in the back of a bathroom medicine cabinet.

So, why not simply flush those unused meds right down the toilet?

Bad move; those same experts say chemicals like hormones and antibiotics are winding up in increasing amounts in our water. By contrast, the Prescription Drug Take-Back program utilizes environmentally-responsible methods of drug disposal.

Police stress that participation in the program is completely anonymous. Citizens concerned with privacy can remove identifying labels from bottles, or simply dump the contents into the disposal container provided and take the bottle back.

Said New Hope Police Chief Mike Cummings, "For many kids today, their first drug experience comes from prescriptions left by parents in the home medicine cabinet. This Prescription Drug Take-Back event is a great way to protect kids and the environment."

A group of concerned citizens and civic leaders has been formed and held meetings with additional parties in an attempt to secure ownership of the Bucks County Playhouse and ensure that it remains an artistic asset to the community, according to several individuals familiar with the situation who asked to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the negotiations.

Ralph A. Miller, owner of New Hope's famed Bucks County Playhouse, is having apparent difficulty making debt payments, and barring any last minute financial or legal efforts, the theater will be auctioned off at a sheriff sale in Doylestown on Nov. 12, confirmed county officials and court records.

Sources say that a last-minute payment or related action by the owner would not be unexpected.

Miller has been running the theater since 1977, and owes the Stonebridge Bank of Skippack more than $2 million, documents reveal. Neither Miller, his lawyer nor any official of Stonebridge Bank or its parent company would return phone calls requesting information.

Borough officials have also not yet responded to requests for information.

Sheriff sales are much like regular foreclosure auctions, but are presided over by a sheriff due to a state requirement.

Miller was personally served with a notice of the sale on Aug. 25 of this year, a sheriff's hand bill was posted on Sept. 28, and the final affidavit attesting to the notice of sale was filed Oct. 27, according to court records.

Speaking of the upcoming sale, Mechanic Street Mugs owner and business leader Joel Roberts commented, "The Playhouse has a history going back to the Canal House days associating it with Mechanic Street and its businesses. We look forward to whatever future the playhouse has and will continue to work hand in hand with them to improve the creative environment of this artistic neighborhood."

The Bucks County Playhouse, centrally located at 70 S. Main St., quickly became known as a pre-Broadway theater venue following its 1939 opening, with shows like Barefoot in the Park and Harvey premiering there.

The roll call of actors appearing in Playhouse productions is myriad, as are stories of the rumored off-stage antics of some at local bars, restaurants and gatherings. Playhouse actors have included Robert Redford, Grace Kelly, Helen Hayes, Kim Hunter, Shirley Booth, Paul Lynde, Gale Gordon, Roddy McDowell, Walter Matthau, Merv Griffen and Larry Hagman.

High Heel Drag Race on Mechanic Street in New Hope 2010

New Hope's West Mechanic Street was packed Sunday night with Halloween revelers and spectators of the borough's Annual High Heel Drag Race.

Contestants had to race uphill to the top of the block near the canal, then back down the street. The event, sponsored by TearDrop Memories, required that participants wear high heels and carry antique bird cages while running.

Prizes were provided by local merchants, who were quite generous this year.

The legal drag race was immediately followed by a parade of zombies sponsored by Delia's Makeup and Theatrical Supplies.

The whole affair was creepy beyond belief, and the crowd ate it up, so to speak.

New Hope / Solbury School Administrators Keep Sending Buses Over Deteriorating Ferry Street Bridge

Look at the pictures, and decide for yourself if you want the New Hope-Solebury or Solebury School student in your family bussed over a bridge the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says is "deteriorating" and in such "poor condition" that it needs to be completely replaced, but keeps at the same posted weight limit as when built 50 years ago -- 20 tons.

Two parallel roads, feet away, would cost no extra time or money to use, and provide a safe detour until work by the DCNR starts next year. Does deteriorating Ferry Street Bridge threaten New Hope and Solebury P.A. schoolchildren?

The State Department of Natural Resources and Conservation has decided to begin completely replacing New Hope's Ferry Street Bridge spanning the Delaware Canal in November of next year, and aims to finish sometime the following spring.

But if the bridge is deteriorating and needs to be replaced sooner than later as the DCNR claims, why hasn't the agency lowered the weight limit of 20 tons, established when the structure was in a much newer condition?

Wayne Nguyen, who is coordinating the bridge replacement project for the DCNR, acknowledges that there has been "some section loss" and that the "deterioration is probably on the deck itself." While it's true, he says, that the main "beams of the bridge are rusted, there's not a lot of section loss."

When asked about the apparent corrosion of supports attached to the beams, Nguyen said, "The sidewalk has been closed. We usually inspect every two to three years, but the engineers recommended that we inspect every year."

He said that inspectors from Raudenbush Engineering, Inc. examined the bridge this year and determined that the 20 ton limit was "okay."

When asked if it might be prudent to lower that limit or redirect some traffic, particularly school buses, one block in order to ensure the safety of schoolchildren, Nguyen replied "I'm not sure how much a school bus weighs; unless it weighs more than 20 tons, the bridge should be able to handle it."

In addition to large trucks and tour buses, buses from at least two area schools pass over the Ferry Street Bridge twice a day.

According to WikiAnswers, the "average, 38', 84 passenger school bus weighs in between 11 and 14 Tons (22,000 to 28,000 pounds) curb weight without passengers. When you add 84 passengers, say high school students, that can add up to 14,700 additional pounds in weight, bringing the total up to about 42,700 pounds."

Admittedly, some of the buses using the bridge may weigh less than the average figure quoted, and perhaps the images of a flaking, peeling and corroding bridge depicted above can be explained away by those with an engineering background, unlike this reporter.

But the question remains: are drivers and passengers, especially schoolchildren, being unnecessarily put at risk?

Police, fire and rescue vehicles including airboats were called out from New Hope, Solebury, Central Bucks, Lambertville at approximately 2:30 p.m. Sunday as two individuals were reported to be floating downstream on a blue barrel on the Delaware River near Stockton. Police and rescue units took up staggered positions along the Pennsylvania side of the river and on the New Hope-Lambertville free bridge.

Meanwhile, on the raging brown river below, a life and death drama was being played out, according to Jeff Vinosky, 21, of Fairless Hills and Gary Lewis, 21, of Levittown, who say they spotted the barrel while kayaking on the adjacent Delaware and Raritan Canal.

Just as they entered the river near Prallsville Mills to assist the two men they had seen clinging to the barrel for life, one of those in trouble broke away from the improvised float and swam for a nearby strip of land in the river.

The apparent good samaritans said they were able to reach the first victim and guide him ashore to safey, but couldn't fight the roiling, post-flood waters and crosscurrents from a nearby stream to reach the second, who was by then clinging to a tree near the water's edge. They alerted rescue personnel, and an airboat appeared soon thereafter to secure that victim.

According to witnesses, the two individuals in trouble had toppled their canoe upriver. One fan of the Facebook site "New Hope PA" posted Sunday that he had seen two individuals "struggling" in a canoe near the Black Bass Hotel at 1:45 p.m.

Emergency personnel on both sides of the river have been mum on the incident, deferring questions to one another and the New Jersey State Police, who say they have no record of the incident.

This reporter's guess would be that since the two "barrel boys" didn't need transportation to a hospital, and since it's not illegal to canoe or ride in a blue plastic barrel immediately after near-flood level waters on the Delaware, no emergency officials felt like filing a comprehensive incident report on a Sunday afternoon.

Nor, apparently, in giving credit where it was also due.

Let's be clear. The pair of young victims in the river, by all accounts, were exhausted, pale, uncommunicative and generally "shocky," having been immersed in very cold, fast-moving water for more than half an hour. However poor their judgment was in attempting to preamble about on post-flood waters akin to the chocolate river in Willy Wonka studded with fast-moving logs, let's not blame the victims.

But let's celebrate the heroes: Gary Lewis and Jeff Vinosky. These two stuck to the safer canal near Stockton on their afternoon kayak run, but seeing two people clinging for life in the rushing Delaware was enough for them to paddle without thought into harm's way, grabbing one victim and handing him their life vest, and locating and getting help for the second.

These two should receive a public award.

The 17th Annual New Hope Outdoor Arts and Crafts Festival came off without a major hitch this weekend, with great weather Saturday followed by a soggy Sunday that didn't deter interest in the event.

Contestents, exhibitors and vendors were varied and interesting, and there was no shortage of junk food to nosh upon while plying the crowded streets. A crowd favorite: the cup of seafood chowder with buttered roll offered for $2 by New Hope's Eagle Fire Company.

New Hope police today filed charges against Nydia Neubauer (aka Lucy George, aka Nydia Vega Reeves) alleging felony crimes of theft by deception, receiving stolen property, identity theft, bad checks, forgery and criminal attempt.

Police say Neubauer "conducted a high end flim flam operation" in New Hope, including "the purchase of three properties, high end jewelry, and passing numerous checks on accounts for which she had no authority."

Two of the three properties are owned by area developer George Michael, and the third was purchased in Philadelphia through New Hope realtors, confirmed Corporal Matt Zimmerman of the New Hope Police Department.

Zimmerman also confirmed that the woman known as "Lucy George" in New Hope, the woman being held in a Monmouth County prison as "Nydia Neubauer", and the "Nydia Luz Vega" depicted in the passport photo (above) are one in the same.

Police estimate that total damages arising from her alleged fraudulent activity could reach $7.5 million, of which $250,000 was in the form of "bad checks."

Amazingly enough, New Hope police are also seeing signs of "old activity in Bucks County dating back to the 1970s." They believe Peddler's Village may have been among Neubauer's targets back then.

Local police appear to have left no stone unturned in their efforts to build a strong case against Neubauer.

"We have worked very hard on following this case by the numbers to ensure a successful prosecution," explained Zimmerman. "We intend to make whatever restitution is available to the victims."

Neubauer is currently being held in Monmouth County Correctional Institute in Freehold, N.J., and is expected to be extradited to New York next to face a larceny charge there.

Details continue to emerge that Nydia Neubauer (aka Lucy George, Nydia Luz Vega, Nydia Vega Reeves, Nina de Vega, Lucy Micheals George, etc.), returned to New Hope last spring after fleeing Manhattan, wrote bad checks while living in a $995,000 townhouse in local builder George Michael’s Canal Street development, and was arrested at the well-known Connolly Station Restaurant and Tavern at 711 Main Street in Belmar, N.J.

Records obtained from Belmar Police indicate that "on Aug. 19, Nydia Neubauer, 63, of New York, NY was arrested for providing false information, theft of services, fraudulent credit card use, issuing bad checks and being a fugitive from justice at 711 Main St."

A photocopy of a passport belonging to a "Nydia Luz Vega" obtained by this reporter from an alleged victim in New York City lists her date of birth as "19 Jun 1947", the same birthday recorded by the Monmouth County Sheriff's office as that of the "Nydia Neubauer" they are holding. Additionally, several local residents and jeweler/victim George Zykos have verified the passport photo of Nydia Luz Vega as being an image of the woman they knew as "Lucy George."

A time line of alleged swindling is gradually taking shape, and it appears to lead from New Hope (circa early 1980s) to Southampton, Long Island, on to New York City in 2002, where it disappears until 2009. Following a New York Post article in April of this year, it appears that "Nydia Vega Reeves", as she was known in Manhattan, fled to New Hope in May. Living in New Hope as "Lucy George", she seems to have left the borough in late June and landed at the Jersey Shore in July.

Apparently, according to arrest records and victims, she had offered a bad credit card and rubber checks to staff at Connolly Station, a large Irish-themed restaurant formed by the combination of two smaller pubs. The owners also operate Farrell's Stout and Steak in Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. and the Irish Rail in Manasquan, N.J.

Ultimately, the biggest mistake of Nydia's long career may be remembered as her not knowing that the Belmar Police station is located at 601 Main Street, one block away from Connolly Station.

Alleged con artist behind bars in N.J. may have New Hope connection

Nydia Neubauer, an alleged check bouncer, is behind bars at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold, N.J., as a “fugitive from justice” on $100,000 bail, according to a prison spokesperson.

Neubauer was taken into custody by the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 19, and according to the prison, her listed aliases include “Lucy Micheals,” and “Lucy Micheals George”.

Upper Southampton Township Police Chief Ron MacPherson confirmed that his department was notified of her arrest by New Jersey police because she was identified as the “Lucy George” sought in an outstanding arrest warrant issued by his department. Southampton police subsequently requested on Aug. 30 that she continue to be detained in the Freehold prison in connection with a fraud case involving a limousine company.

A woman using the “Lucy George” name appears to have operated for at least several weeks this spring in New Hope and Lambertville, N.J., allegedly writing bad checks and occupying a $995,000 townhouse at 42 W. Mechanic St. (below) in local builder George Michael’s Canal Street development in New Hope, according to neighbors, alleged victims and law enforcement officials.

The “Lucy George” alias is one that two local jewelers have come to know well.

Dimitri Politicos, owner of Lambertville, N.J. jewelry store Dimitri Designs at 41 Bridge St., said by phone from Greece that he had been taken for $50,000 in merchandise after being given a rubber check from a “Lucy George” around the same time. While at first suspicious of such a large amount, the jeweler claims she reassured him by referring to “expensive homes” she had “bought” from George Michael.

George Zykos, who owns a jewelry store at 34 S. Main St. in New Hope, told a similar story. Two checks accepted from a “Lucy George” in exchange for merchandise later bounced, he said. After contacting her repeatedly to complain, she returned to his store on June 13 and charged more than $42,000 to an American Express card imprinted with the name “Lucyluz George Jr,” claiming to be a second cardholder. Like the incident in Lambertville, she again used Michael’s name, saying he “would back her” financially, said Zykos.

A spokesperson for Michael declined comment on this story.

An American Express receipt shown to this reporter bore the approval date of June 14 with the name “Lucyluz George Jr” and a charged amount of $42,589.30. Zykos says the card was cancelled the following week and he remains unpaid. An American Express spokesperson declined comment on the incident.

New Hope resident Harry Snavely says a woman calling herself “Lucy George” attended an art gallery opening in New Hope in May.

“She plopped down in a chair and announced to the room, ‘My husband just died and I have $200 million,’” Snavely said.

Snavely claims that she is the same woman who lived in New Hope some 30 years ago under the alias “Nina de Vega.”

A passport photo (above) obtained by this reporter from an alleged victim in New York City who requested anonymity bears the name “Nydia Luz Vega.” Three drivers for a limousine service used by “Lucy George” identified her as the individual depicted in the photo, as did the owner of the art gallery where Snavely says he saw her in May, and a neighbor.

“Lucy George” is described by neighbors as a blonde-haired woman who frequently wore sunglasses, and was approximately 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighed around 160-170 pounds. Neighbors also say she lived and traveled with two small dogs and another woman, whom she introduced as her maid. The entourage appeared in New Hope in May and departed by the end of June.

Interestingly, “Nydia Neubauer” is an alias used by Nydia Vega Reeves, a “con queen” from New York City according to an April article in the New York Post, who said Reeves had been “dishing out bad checks and renting luxury apartments without paying” since arriving at a plush New York City hotel with two small dogs.

The article also reported that Reeves “is said to owe a California-based real-estate developer nearly $50,000 and New York real-estate adviser Paul Ippolito about $60,000. Reeves, 62, who claims she grew up with Ralph Lauren and inherited $100 million from her late husband William Reeves, was exposed in 2002 after writing bad checks under the name of ‘Nydia Neubauer’ to Denise Rich’s cancer research charity.”

Aside from Upper Southampton, prison and police officials involved in Neubauer’s detention also say New York City authorities are currently seeking her extradition. The New York City Police Department declined to comment.

According to a limousine industry association column in the August edition of Black Car News, “Ms. Reeves most recently conned a number of Pennsylvania Businesses this month going by the name ‘Lucy George.’ Among those businesses were limousine companies, jewelers and real estate developers.”

New Hope Police Chief Mike Cummings acknowledged that his department is actively investigating alleged incidences of confidence fraud involving the writing of bad checks.

“Several people in town have been victims,” he said. “As the investigation is ongoing, I can’t provide further details at this time.”

Grand slam: second venue cements New Hope's reputation as poetry haven

Come Monday night, they'll be slamming 'em down at Marcella's Restaurant and Bar in New Hope.

Poems, that is.

Marcella's will be holding its first poetry "slam," or competition between performers of the spoken word.

Organized by Bill Winkler, the event will complement the well established monthly Beat Night held at the New Hope Arts Center.

"The spoken word is alive and well in New Hope," said Bob Jamison, poet, writer and frequent MC at Beat Night, who will be attending Monday's event.

Robert Salup, renowned poet who has hosted slams and readings in New Jersey and Pennsylvania (including a prior slam series at Karla's Restaurant in New Hope) will also be attending -- and hopefully reading -- at Monday's venue.

"Poetry contains as much energy as a Hollywood movie," observed Salup. "All it needs is poets to make it come alive."

Until what hour should vehicles be allowed to use the parking lot next to New Hope's Borough Hall (formerly St. Martin of Tours church)?

That's the central question to be discussed and voted upon at the next New Hope Borough Hall meeting in two weeks.

Right now, the meters at the lot stop running at 9 p.m. (as they do in most places around town), but parked vehicles are expected legally to vamvoose soon thereafter.

Some neighbors wouldn't mind less of a "circus-like" atmosphere, which they attribute to drunken revelers parking at the nearby lot late at night, by and large. Others ask why this parking lot won't let patrons remain until at least 2:30 a.m., when many bars, restaurants, clubs, and other parking lots close for the night.

An application by popular New Hope steak house Marsha Brown of 15 S. Main St. to add outdoor seating was stymied last night at a meeting of the borough's Zoning Hearing Board.

The proposal had been sent to the board following a split decision by New Hope's Borough Council on whether to recommend approval.

The meeting was well attended by residents, merchants and borough officials, and by the time it was over, the restaurant's request for 12 variances to facilitate the creation of an outdoor seating area for 24 patrons was denied entirely.

Marsha Brown manager and executive chef Caleb Lentchner was clearly disappointed in the decision. "For five years we've done nothing but support the town as much as we could, and in our time of need Borough Hall turned their back on us," he said.

Noting that virtually every restaurant in New Hope has some type of limited outdoor seating arrangement, Lentchner asserted, "Outdoor dining in front of our restaurant would form a small opportunity for us to have a fair chance during these warm summer days.

"We've been denied our ability to compete," he continued.

While not wishing to discuss potential next steps, Lentchner observed, "There's a very strong business community in New Hope, and we're supporting each other during these challenging economic times."

Requests for comment by borough officials were not immediately returned.

Petition to expand hours at New Hope PA public parking lot gains momentum

A petition asking New Hope's Borough Council to expand parking hours at the New Street lot adjacent to borough hall is now being displayed at dozens of business locations around town and appears to have garnered at minimum several hundred signatures representing residents, merchants and visitors.

The petition organizers, including local business leader Joel Roberts and Borough Councilperson Bill Scandone, are attempting to demonstrate support for keeping the key parking area open until 2:30 a.m., as are other lots in the borough.

The issue will be taken up at the New Hope Borough Council meeting scheduled for September 21, where a previous proposal to expand parking lot hours until 10:30 p.m. from the current 9 p.m. will be considered.

Crime Report: burglary in Solebury, auto break-ins in Doylestown

Solebury Township Police report that there was a forced entry residential burglary on Old Windy Bush Road on Wednesday, Aug. 18 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The apparent point of entry was a rear exterior door, forced open with a one-inch pry tool, said local authorities.

Police in Solebury are looking for a suspect vehicle described as "a dark green older model Jeep Cherokee occupied by two Hispanic males" that was seen on Old Windy Bush Road on Aug. 17 and 18. The vehicle and occupants were also spotted on Covered Bridge Road, allegedly looking for a horse farm when confronted by a resident after rapping on the front door and a side window of his home, said Chief of Police Dominick Bellizzie.

Bellizzie advises residents to exercise common sense precautions, like locking doors and making sure to activate alarm systems before leaving home.

Separately, Doylestown Police Chief Stephen White said his township has been "inundated" with auto break-ins for months, with an average 10-15 such incidents per week.

The thieves involved are targeting cellphones, GPS systems, wallets, laptop computers and other small items that might be sold easily to purchase drugs or for other purposes. The suspects are believed to be in their twenties and living in the area or a neighboring county, according to White.

He advises residents, as cannot be repeated often enough, to lock their vehicles and not leave valuable articles in plain view.

Not! This multi-room space is crammed with accoutrements.

What had been billed by locals for months as a future "lingerie shop" at 6 W. Bridge St. turned out this week to be much, much more.

Sweet Escape is a "sensual store for women and couples," says owner Dawn Ellery.

Tastefully decorated, with an airy, inviting feeling, the store belies the adult store stereotype.

The lingerie serves as a veil, behind which are roomy display areas for oils, unguents, and what might appear to the famous cartoon character Mr. Magoo as an extensive selection of *ahem* plumbing fixtures and thermoses. Beyond are smaller rooms, with more lingerie, a low-key selection of DVDs, and books for women and couples of all lifestyles.

So what distinguishes this shop from three others of somewhat similar ilk in New Hope?

"The store is open and romantic, dialogue is encouraged, the product mixture is good, and we're creating a more comfortable space," says Ellery.

Reigning king of fetish wear Le Chateau Exotique on West Mechanic Street won't be threatened competitively by this newcomer, but the other two must be sweating.

Ellery aims to utilize the large space for events, including those run by therapists specializing in wellness and sensuality education. A former corporate benefits manager, she lives in Yardley with her husband and two children.

This store will be a contender.

A grand opening celebration featuring wine, cheese, and giveaways is scheduled for 6-10 p.m., Aug. 28.

Spotlight on parking lot issue at New Hope PA Borough Council meeting

The focus was on parking lot hours of operation at Tuesday night's meeting of the New Hope Borough Council.

It seems that when the borough took over ownership of Saint Martin of Tours Catholic Church and its adjacent parking lot a few years ago, it also gained the legal right to change parking lot policy. Net effect: a $3.00-$5.00 lot allowing parking until 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9:00 p.m. Sunday became a metered lot that shut down at 9:00 p.m. every night of the week.

One can park at other metered locations throughout the borough, pay only until 9:00, and vehicles can be left overnight for no charge.

When Friday Night Fireworks began this summer, some car owners reported being ticketed in the borough lot, although they had returned quickly to their vehicles after the show. That, in turn, gained the attention W. Mechanic St. business owners, including Joel Roberts, who raised the issue with Borough Council and was invited to speak during the public portion of their monthly meeting by Council President Sharyn Keiser.

(Later in the summer, police tacitly began allowing cars to stay until around 10:30 p.m. on friday nights to accomodate visiting fireworks spectators.)

Speakers on both sides of the issue were respectful and reasoned, with varying resident views of where New Hope's future lies. Aside from Roberts, Frank Policare of Penn Wealth Planning spoke articulately about returning to a more vibrant commercial era featuring late evening dining and entertainment, and Ernie Bowman, former Historic Archictectural Review Board Chairman, talked eloquently of a period even further back in time when New Hope was a less crowded, quieter place in which to live.

After listening to public speakers representing all sides of the issue, Borough Council voted and proposed a compromise solution providing for lot closure at 10:30 each evening. Councilpersons Bill Scandone and Ed Duffy objected to the proposal, emphasizing the need to help local commerce by extending lot hours until at least 11:00 p.m.

The issue will be heard before Borough Council again on September 21, at which time the proposal for a nightly 10:30 parking lot closure can be approved or denied following public input, or a new proposal for a different hour can be discussed and put forth for a vote during the following month's meeting.

When California natives Louis and Eddie Vanegas came to New Hope via New York City some nine years ago, their goal was to make a simple living by baking a great pie of pizza.

And despite several challengers over the years, the brothers Vanegas have stayed on top, occupying an important niche in family-style, value-oriented dining.

Their secret?

"Friendly service," says Louis. Of course, offering free delivery to New Hope, Lambertville and Solebury doesn't hurt either.

Neither does the pizza itself: traditional style, on the thin side, crispy but not crackly or cornmeal-ensconced. It's really "Queens style," i.e. not dripping cheese, with light use of a special sauce made with two kinds of tomato.

So, what flavor of pizza to choose? The clear neighborhood favorite is the Buffalo Chicken pie.

Overall: inexpensive, traditional pizza, along with good subs, salads, cheese steaks and wings; family-friendly.

New Hope - Solebury School Superintendent to Seek Fourth Kindergarten Class

Superintendent Raymond Boccuti of the New Hope-Solebury School District acknowledged tonight that he will "move forward with a fourth kindergarten class" for the coming school year.

Many New Hope parents of kindergarten-aged children have been concerned about classes exceeding 25 students or more, with at least 77 students enrolled so far and only three classes authorized.

Boccuti said he has been monitoring the situation daily, and now that enrollment for the fall has stabilized, he will recommend a fourth kindergarten class to the New Hope-Solebury School Board on Monday.

Lots of people in New Hope, PA know Memo (pronounced like the word 'memo') Quieroz.

He says he's 59, but I don't believe it, even though his hair seems to get darker with each passing year.

He's been working for a long time in New Hope, sometimes 20 hours in a row or more, and saving his money so that he could become a businessman once more, as he had been in his native Mexico. He's been a regular fixture about town, working jobs like parking lot supervisor and maintenance person in places like George Michael's Union Square and Canal Street developments, as well as the Four Seasons Mall at 32 S. Main St.

He survived some hard times in Mexico, and worked so hard here that he had a heart attack a few years ago, but bounced back, saved his pennies and has now bought the well known Planet Wear store in the Four Seasons Mall (first store on the left), renaming it "Memo Wear."

Offerings consist mainly of soccer shirts emblazoned with the national colors of various World Cup teams, t-shirts, jeans, jewelry and Lotto games. I bought one of the soccer shirts that he still carries about a year ago from the prior owner; it's held up well and seems high-quality.

Memo himself seems like a high quality guy, and living proof that the American Dream lives on in New Hope, PA.

New Hope PA is Ice Cream Lover's Paradise

During the 1960s in places like Philadelphia and Central New Jersey the most exotic frozen treat around was a "neapolitan", those xeroxed squares of layered strawberry, chocolate and vanilla ice cream.

When visiting Gerenser's ice cream shop in New Hope back then, I'd be astounded by exotic flavors previously unimaginable. My fave at the time: honeydew.

Today, I also like Shawn's hand made ice cream at Zoubi Food; my family buys a pint of mango flavored almost every week. And the high cream content and overall quality of the Thomas Sweet selection at the Last Temptation (pictured above at 115. S. Main St.) is awesome in all its splendid caloric excess. Most recently, I was impressed by the coffee crunch, with bits o' bean in every bite.

Dunkin' Donuts also has some frozen things, and I've heard there's good ice cream at Weenie World. There's Rita's if you like ices or their type of soft serve, and a friendly but unmemorable purveyor near the bridge.

New Hope is truly an ice cream lover's kind of town!

Driver Who Struck Enrique Patino Arrested and Charged with DUI

Robert McNamara, 26, of Robbinsville, NJ was placed under arrest and charged with driving under the influence during a vehicle investigation by Ewing, NJ Police, Lieutenant Gerald Jacobs confirmed this afternoon.

As previously reported, Enrique Patino, 44, owner of the Blue Tortilla Restaurant at 18 N. Main St. in New Hope, was hit from behind and killed while stopped on his motorcycle at a traffic light. The incident occurred at Route 29 and Lower Ferry Road in Ewing, NJ at 2:26 a.m. Saturday, said Jacobs. McNamara was taken into custody shortly thereafter and tested for alcohol blood level at a nearby hospital.

Patino's public viewing will be held Thursday 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Leaver-Cable Funeral Home (215-794-7696) in Buckingham; private funeral next day.

Blue Tortilla Restaurant Owner Apparently Killed in Motorcycle Crash

Enrique Patino, 42, owner of the Blue Tortilla Restaurant at 18 North Main Street in New Hope, PA was killed Friday night in a motorcycle crash, according to local friends. He is survived by his wife and four children.

He had previously owned the Milagros Gallery at 13 West Mechanic Street, where I knew him as a neighbor. He was a handsome, soft-spoken, dark haired man who seemed constantly in motion, entrepreneurial and intensely dedicated to his family.

Carl Glassman, owner of New Hope's famed Wedgwood Inn, best summed up the tragic event: "We all are in shock at Enrique's untimely passing. Friday, July 30, 2010 was a starlit summers' evening. No humidity, a nice break from the heat of the last few weeks. Between the great weather and the fireworks, New Hope was abuzz with visitors. A friend who is a server at Blue Tortilla said the restaurant was busy all day and night. She left at 11 p.m. Enrique was still there closing up when she left. At some point after that Enrique took a ride on his motorcycle..."

An alleged con woman has been operating in New Hope recently and local police are investigating her activities. The alleged suspect bears a strong resemblance to a grifter known in New York City to owe large amounts of money and to have written bad checks and rented apartments without paying. New Hope Business Leader Takes on Visitor Parking Tickets

Joel Roberts, like many raised in the Midwest, is the type of guy who tries to be friendly and helpful to everyone he meets.

He owns Mechanic Street Mugs in New Hope, PA and helped start, and runs, the Mechanic Street Merchants' Association and Second Saturdays in New Hope.

Some too young too know any better mistake him for Jerry Garcia; actually, he's related to Benjamin Franklin, and if you look closely enough there's a resemblance.

Most days you can see him out in front of his store at 10 W. Mechanic Street, sanding wooden bowls or finishing a crossword puzzle. He likes Rib Night at the Candlewyck Lounge. He avoids talk of politics and religion whenever possible.

But something finally got his goat several weeks back: reports were emerging among fellow merchants as diverse as Meshell Kimbel (God Save the Qweens) and Frank Policare (Penn Wealth Planning) on Facebook and elsewhere about visitors' vehicles being ticketed by police during and after the weekly Friday Night Fireworks event which begins at 9:30 p.m.

Seems that when the borough took over Saint Martin's Church and its accompanying parking lot, one of New Hope's largest, the tacit policy of allowing patrons to leave their cars after the lot's closure at 9:00 p.m. was discontinued.

Says Roberts, "A lot of our customers every day, but especially on Friday nights now that fireworks have started, question us store owners about the wisdom of this policy. I tend to believe them and feel that having a public parking lot close at nine p.m. and then ticket those people that remain is a really BAD plan. How do we explain to them that they can move their car to a meter on the street if they can find one and park for free but the borough lot is closed to the public?"

If the borough hall is going to be the place where borough meetings are held, how do we expect to tell attending people that at 9:00 they must remove their cars and move them to a street meter when the meetings run past nine p.m.?" he added. "This policy or ordinance makes no sense and should be changed in my opinion and others here on Mechanic Street."

Roberts fired off a letter to Borough Hall and, following a second epistle, was invited to appear before Borough Council at its next monthly meeting on August 17 to present his concerns.

Explains Council President Sharyn Keiser, "We want to hear from everyone in the vicinity [of the parking lot]; Council is not going to make a decision without their input."

According to Keiser, not only are residents of New Street potentially affected by parking policy at the lot, but also those of West Mechanic Street and the nearby Riverwoods/Village Two housing development.

"We want to be fair to everybody," she said.

She also said that those attending official borough functions typically held in the evening, like Council meetings and community events, are not being ticketed.

And lately, the borough seems to have stopped ticketing vehicles parked in the lot during weekly fireworks displays on Friday nights, although their owners shouldn't dawdle too long after the show is over in returning to their cars and trucks and moving them.

Still, Roberts will be seeking clarification and improvement of Borough Hall parking lot policy at the August 17 meeting so that New Hope's evening visitors throughout each week aren't turned off by unexpected violation notices on their car or truck windshields.

"I think that the parking lot policy could also be changed to "No overnight parking" and accomplish the same thing as attempting to close a public lot and leave people to only park on public streets at public meters," he said.

Power Outage Shuts Downtown New Hope PA for Three Hours

A power outage struck downtown New Hope today for three hours following the arrival of a thunderstorm with high winds at around 3:00 p.m. Facebook user "Wedgwood Inn" reported that "a lightening strike on a utility pole and electrical wires near Aquatong and 202 did the deed."

In a recorded message, PECO indicated that 703 customers were affected. Many stores, restaurants and events were forced to shut down, and groups of bored, worried merchants could be seen chatting between darkened storefronts.

Some businesses like Gerenser's Ice Cream remained open, owing to a large portable electric generator. Outside the town's center, businesses like McDonalds hummed along unfazed.

Fortunately, the storm brought with it cooler, more comfortable temperatures.

New State Run Liquor Store in New Hope Looks Like a Hit

It's probably too early to tell, but last week's opening of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board's new Fine Wine & Good Spirits store at the Logan Square shopping complex in New Hope already shows signs of being a hit with consumers.

A visit to the new wine and liquor shop revealed a well rounded selection of products, competitive prices and a steady stream of excited customers. Said one departing customer with a large paper bag (the store tries to be environmentally responsible), "Great selection, well laid out, and easy to find what you want."

Commenting on the new location, PLCB Chairman Patrick J. "PJ" Stapleton said, "We are thrilled with the New Hope Store and we hope consumers are as well. It is a prototype store which means we will take the feedback from consumers to find out what works and what doesn't work and to see if there are things we can do better. Our rebranding effort is a work in progress."

A focal point of the new store is a center table, where consumers can find staff to answer questions, provide tasting selections, and ring them up quickly. The atmosphere is more Barnes & Noble than the typically dark and claustrophobic spirit shops one encounters.

The wine offerings seemed to represent many of today's most popular bottles, with a naturally heavy emphasis on domestics from California, Pennsylvania and other states. France and Italy were given equal weight with countries like Chile and Australia, which again reflects current consumer tastes, but also means the variety of Bordeaux, Cotes du Rhone, Barolo and other more traditional favorites was somewhat limited. All in all, the wines were fairly priced and well displayed, with numerous highlighted specials.

The liquor selection was impressive, dominated by a huge offering of various vodka brands. Surprising was the relatively large choice of cordials, rums and bourbons, including some hard to find bottles. Among these were the incomparable Booker's Bourbon on sale for $41.99, and Ron Zacapa 23-year-old, arguably the world's smoothest rum, for $44.99. Even the Bacardi 8 was a good buy; at $19.99 it was $7.00 less than I last paid in New Jersey.

Competition from New Jersey liquor vendors minutes away is a serious challenge, for sure. Pennsylvania's relatively archaic laws mandating that liquor and wine be sold in state stores and beer largely at discount outlets, restaurants and bars have put the state at a disadvantage in the past. But alcohol taxes have been rising in the Garden State of late, and the PLCB seems determined to compete effectively.

Says Stapleton, "Our selection and pricing is very competitive with New Jersey. We believe our store in New Hope will be a destination and people from both Pennsylvania and New Jersey will shop in it."

A movement afoot in the Pennsylvania Legislature to privatize alcohol distribution also adds urgency to the PLCB's effort to become a more consumer-focused retail business.

"The public-policy decision regarding government's appropriate role in the sale of wine and spirits in PA is a matter for our elected public-policy makers -- the Legislature and the Governor to decide," commented Stapleton. "Our job at the PLCB is to spend our time, energy and resources creating the very best consumer experience we can. We are focused on that effort every day and think Pennsylvanians will continue to be pleased with the changes we've made," he added.

So far, those changes appear well-received. The new store is "very pleasant," said Glenn Ricci of New Hope. "Everybody is very cordial and helpful, the place looks great, and everything's nicely displayed so it's easy to choose."

Another exiting customer, a tall, distinguished gentleman wearing sunglasses, a Panama hat, and a beatific smile, when asked what he thought of the store responded simply, "Lovely. Just lovely."

"Grand Reopening" Celebration for Delaware Canal Overlooks New Hope Problems

The public was invited to the party today in Easton, PA celebrating the "grand reopening" of the Delaware Canal and adjacent towpath following repairs necessitated by three devastating floods on the nearby Delaware River from 2004-2006. The organizers, a mixture of private groups and state bigwigs, mention in their publicity efforts that it's really the towpath part that's open from Easton to Bristol, PA...they'll fill it all up with water later.

But what exactly is a towpath without a canal? If it's smack in the middle of the #1 tourist destination in Bucks County, one might call it a fiasco for the residents, visitors, merchants and wildlife of New Hope.

Of course, the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) confirmed on July 9 that they will not have the the New Hope portion of the Delaware Canal repaired and refilled this summer. A spokesperson for the DCNR said the problem was funding. "It won't be until at least the fall until we can start," she said. "The money is not in place at this point."

But interviews with several individuals familiar with the DCNR and construction say bureaucratic indecision and a lack of a cohesive, strategic approach to the entire New Hope canal section is to blame. "They just don't know what to do in Harrisburg," said one individual who asked not to be identified. "They can't make a decision, they're over their heads and don't know what to do."

Another person familiar with masonry and plumbing who asked to remain anonymous said that the biggest problem areas could be lined with dark green plastic, which would be virtually unnoticeable once the canal is refilled with water.

But could a plastic liner last a year or two to allow time for more enduring restoration work during the off season?

"Hell," said another individual familar with the situation who asked not to be identified. "It could last three, four years, or more."

So, if the state doesn't have funding in place to repair one of the busiest sections of the Delaware Canal and truly complete the project, why not? Is the DCNR official in charge unable to get the job done, or is New Hope just a low priority for the Harrisburg department?

We may never know.

Meanwhile, sporadic work continues almost daily at different points along the aging canal walls, mostly repointing the masonry and moving dirt around. The activity has a distinctly piecemeal appearance to the casual observer. Ducks and geese sit in hot, caked mud waiting for relief; the giant lock at the southern end looks frozen and forlorn.

There will be "no joy in Mudville" today, and no celebration anytime soon in New Hope for a water filled, functioning canal.

Zoubi, the famed West Mechanic Street culinary conglomerate comprised of restaurant, patisserie, and take-out elements, is evolving yet again, particularly in the Zoubi Food store at the corner of New Street.

With fans aplenty for its savory standbys like raucus rubbed ribs, irresistible iron grilled shrimp, heavenly pastries, and handmade ice cream, this take-out lover's paradise is boosting its lunch menu with new panini, salads and a sandwich menu inspired by New Hope's famed thoroughfares.

So now you can order a Bridge Street (pate compagne with cornichons, mustard, chutney, onion and greens on baguette), Riverwoods Drive (white tuna salad on croissant), or the outrageous New Street (peanut butter and bacon on white toast with fig jam).

Zoubi will also offer new hoagies, grinders and other lunch specialties, along with free local delivery with a minimum $20 order (a move that will extend their sales range to merchants and businesses at, for example, nearby Union Square and beyond)

Says head honcho and pastry chef extraordinaire Shawn "Cakes" Lawson, "We're always trying new things and adapting to meet the needs of the community."

At around $6.00 a pop, the new sandwich selection should deliver even more Zoubi bang for the buck.

But do the sandwiches match the personalities of their asphalt namesakes? You can decide.

Movie Makeup Artist to Unveil New Hope PA Locale

Now this could get interesting.

What I thought was going to be just another makeup/cosmetics/beauty store looks like it may become a unique phenomenon in the New Hope merchant biosphere.

First off: owner Delia De Cock has been a makeup artist for fashion, theater, TV, and has headed makeup departments for movies, which means she can retail regular cosmetics and offer beauty services to the general public with some authority.

What becomes intriguing is that she's also done special effects in films and is versed in permanent makeup, also known as "medical tattooing." That translates into tattooed, flawless looking eyeliner, lip liner and eyebrows that last for years, and also masking scars.

But De Cock can also make scars. Phony ones, thankfully, along with fantasy and aging makeup, facial and body hair simulation, prosthetics and a range of other exotic specialties borne of her special effects and character makeup training. And she'll offer all of these theatrical supplies and services to the public and professionals alike.

Being a block or two away from the Bucks County Playhouse and driving distance to other regional theaters should also boost De Cock's business prospects.

Although where De Cock might really rock is around Halloween time, and also doing drag.

A musician and fencer in her spare time, she turns out to have a friendly, flexible, down-to-earth personality, and has a cute family going, despite the edgy, fashion-savvy exterior.

Lambertville Canal Creep Still at Large

Law enforcement officials continue to search for an unknown man that severely beat a Lambertville, N.J. woman 11 days ago as she jogged alongside the Delaware and Raritan Canal. She apparently fought back fiercely enough to send the attacker scurrying away down the towpath.

The July 1 attack took place just beyond Lambertville's border with West Amwell Township, and the motive remains unknown.

With police continuing to actively seek the assistance of the public and the suspect remaining at large, we asked the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's office whether the investigation was getting bogged down. Said spokesman Dan Hurley, "The investigation has not stalled. We continue to receive and track down numerous leads. The investigation remains active and being investigated on a daily basis.

"The New Jersey Park Police have stepped up patrols in the area," he added, "There is still considerable investigative work to complete and we continue to seek the assistance of the public as it is likely more than one person saw the suspect either prior to or after the crime."

Meanwhile, local towpath joggers seem to be taking extra precautions. Said one Lambertville woman, "I used to run early in the morning on the towpath, and I haven't been lately."

New Hope, P.A. Police Chief Mike Cummings confirmed that his department's increased foot patrols along the Delaware Canal towpath will continue indefinitely. While acknowledging that New Hope is fundamentally a "safe" town, Chief Cummings said the Department is staying vigilant and leaving no stone unturned in protecting the Borough's citizens. "Criminals don't have borders," he explained.

As if to underscore that point, Solebury Township, P.A. police on July 3 arrested Javier Aliel Lopez Marroquin, 26, of Hamilton, N.J., and charged him with indecent exposure and open lewdness.

Marroquin was observed exposing himself along the banks of the Delaware River near Route 32 and Aquetong Road at approximately 4:00 pm on July 3. Solebury Police had issued a warning just the day before that "over the past week incidents involving indecent exposure on the Pennsylvania side of the Towpath" had occurred. At least one of those incidents may have taken place well north of the arrest area, past the Bridge at Rabbit Run on Route 32 in Solebury, according to sources.

Said Dan Hurley of the jogger investigation, "We responded to the recent arrest on the PA side of the river and are looking at all past incidents looking for similarities. We have not ruled out anybody at this point in time as it relates to the potential suspects in this attack."

New Hope PA Sidetracks Art Gallery Presents "Moby Dick on the Delaware" Starting this Weekend

New Hope Sidetracks Art Gallery, inspired by the lost white beluga whale that traveled up the Delaware a few years ago, is bringing “Moby Dick on the Delaware” to New Hope all summer long. Featured are the “Moby Dick Suite” of painter and print-maker Bert Yarborough of New Hampshire and Provincetown; the aluminum sculpture, paintings and ink drawings of Timothy Woodman of Provincetown; and one major color lithograph from “The Passion of Ahab” by Benton Spruance, the mid-20th-century American lithographer. Also featured are works by 18 Sidetracks Gallery artists, many local.

The show opens Saturday July 10, with a public reception from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Yarborough's work is particularly impressive and demonstrates the classic Sidetracks aesthetic.

Bitter Bob Dishes Up a Sweet Deal

Back in March, we interviewed Bitter Bob about his new barbecue style restaurant, so we recently decided to sneak in for a lunchtime sampling of his cooking.

Bottom line: Bitter Bob's didn't disappoint.

The meat selections all had an excellent texture and the right smokey flavor. Sauces can be served on the side; one a mildly spicy vinegar based Carolina style sauce, the other, a classic red BBQ slather with some subtlety. The sampler platter lets you try most of the best entrees.

The sides were glorious: sweet potato fries were a standout, as were the zesty 5-bean BBQ beans, and exceptionally fresh corn bread. Slaw slightly unispired. Decor: sparse. Service: first-rate.

All in all, if our boy Bob can keep prices at this level, he will have a hit on his hands and have no further cause for bitterness in his world. :-)

Le Kaloidis is an excellent abstract oil painter who recently opened a studio and gallery at 43 Bridge Street, in the back portion of the New Hope Arts Center building overlooking the Delaware Canal.

But what's particularly interesting and refreshing is that one can barely get the man to talk about himself; instead he'll shift the conversation to how great the Arts Center's sculpture show is and how much he loves watching the wildlife in the nearly-dry canal. He didn't even mention that his work on paper is on display in the PNC Branch on N. Main Street in New Hope through the end of June.

It also takes a certain amount of chutzpah to be try to make and sell abstract art in a town better known for mixed media paintings of barns and black and white photos of local canal bridges in the fog. But the art he creates has a certain coherence, vibrancy and movement, and when you visit Lee he's clearly more interested in sharing ideas, good company, and promoting art in New Hope rather than selling you a painting.

And if New Hope continues to add working artist studio spaces at reasonable rates around the Art Center nucleus and beyond, then the town will solidify its reputation as a regional art powerhouse. "Art towns" are gauged, after all, not only by the presence of galleries, but on the number of artists living and producing quality work within their boundaries.

One wonders if the owner of the abandoned Zadar's building occupying much of New Hope's prime waterfront would consider the tax advantages of providing low-cost studio spaces for artists there; it would also go a long way to generating goodwill among the town's residents and leadership.

Meanwhile, you might want to check out Lee's place at 43 Bridge. He's an interesting guy and he's got good art. :-)

Louis Zanias, owner of popular New Hope PA restaurants Karla's and Zoubi on West Mechanic Street, several months ago opened a catering/bakery operation and has now apparently been approved to open a full retail bakery at an adjacent location he owns at the corner of New and Mechanic Streets.

Of course, New Hope PA already has an eat-in French bakery (not that Louis is French or the new bakery has seating) further north by the river, but a high quality bakery of any type would be welcome in this particular section of town, not far from new (albeit unsold) housing, parking, Village II and stereotypically doughnut seeking law enforcement personnel.

Louis is a cunning businessman and landowner who's not afraid to play hardball in expanding his empire, in this author's view.

He is also smart, and a new bakery is good news for New Hope.

Opinion: New Hope PA Visitors Center Stripped of Historic Antiques

A 170-year-old table and other pieces of furniture were removed from the New Hope PA Visitors Center according to the Bucks County Herald so that they can be used in the expensive church New Hope's Borough Council purchased and is renovating for their new offices.

In the Herald photo above, a visitors center worker is depicted sitting on the irreplaceable artifact, apparently laughing.

It's disappointing that New Hope's Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce don't have enough faith in the native talent of our town to believe we are fully capable of promoting ourselves, and have chosen instead to pay a small marketing firm in Bensalem, PA to do it for us.

It's also disappointing to see another local news media outlet demonstrate the journalistic sensibility of Pravda.

Meanwhile, get your ass off our table.

The Intelligencer says that the Last Chance Ranch, a Quakertown area animal rescue, received an early Christmas gift, courtesy of talk show host Rachel Ray: a $25,000 prize that will help build a new dog shelter at its Richland property.

Last Chance started out by saving overworked, discarded horses, and a few other farm animals, and it now seems to be moving toward helping more domestic pets.

The Times of Trenton reports today that New Hope's visitor center, located in a former town hall at South Main and Mechanic streets, will be outsourced to the Bucks County Conference and Visitors Bureau beginning January 1, 2010.

"It's a win-win situation for everyone," said Councilman Richard Hirschfield, who for several years was looking for a way to get the tax-funded tourism operation removed from the borough's budget.

The borough had been budgeting $62,000 a year, the equivalent of about $1.1 million in real estate taxes, to operate the center.

[Ed. note: New Hope PA also earns $371,200 per year from parking meters, $315,000 from parking ticketing and stopping vistors' vehicles, $89,000 from its "business privilege tax", and $56,150 from "business licenses and franchise fees"]

"It was felt the borough could contribute and work toward it but it should be the function of the New Hope Chamber of Commerce or some other organization that would promote business," said Hirschfield.

Louis Licitra, former president of the organization, said it was impossible financially for the chamber to operate the visitors' center.

"After all, people come to New Hope for New Hope. They don't come here to see the visitors center," said Licitra.

Topeo Gallery opened in 1980 and has a reputation as one of the best craft galleries in the country. In 2001, the owners opened a second gallery just down the block, Topeo South, featuring even more American artists.

If you've already familiar with New Hope PA, Topeo is located across the street from Mother's Restaurant, and its brilliantly lit windows are filled with spectacular art glass sculptures, lamps and bowls .

It's the kind of place that grabs your eye, and you see the swirling mix of light and color, and you realize that some of those big beautiful pieces are worth more than your weekly salary, and think, "maybe I'll look in the window for a sec, and move on."

My advice: don't.

Not if you're looking for an affordable, yet classy holiday gift, a gorgeous ornament for your Christmas tree or table, or just want to see the beauty of hand crafted glass, much by local artists.

Prices started around $6-8 for small items, and many were in the $10-20 range, as well as $20-30, and up. The larger glass pieces are obviously to die for; the jewelry selection tasteful and extensive. Holiday decor was understated and fit well with the glimmering glass all about.

Walter Hazzard and Andre Marin run the place -- they're soft-spoken, friendly, wry and engaging. They've put together an award winning gallery that helps keep New Hope PA at the forefront of the American craft movement.

Expert custom knife maker Little John will be on site at Medieval Gallery in New Hope PA on weekends throughout the holiday season to present and demonstrate his handiwork.

Little John is fairly well known throughout the region and RenFair community for the quality of his work. The blades are beautifully crafted in stainless and carbon steel, but what really stands out are the custom-designed stag horn handles that are one-of-a-kind works of art in and of themselves.

Also impressive are the bowie style blades, but his work features blade shapes of every style and for every purpose. These are not "fantasy" knives either, but handmade heirlooms that are practical, historical and beautiful.

Captain Bob Keeps on Truckin' This Holiday Season at His Famous New Hope PA Ice Cream Parlor

You'd think that losing a bid for New Hope PA Borough Council (again) and owning an ice cream parlor with winter approaching would be enough to give anyone pause, but not New Hope's very own Bob Gerenser, owner of New Hope landmark Gerenser's Exotic Ice Cream, and plyer of the Delaware's currents, George Washington impersonator and Havana karaoke legend.

I stopped by on Thanksgiving day during my downtown "who's open" tour. Of course a lot of local inns and bars were open to offer cool weather warmth, but not as many shops and smaller businesses. Gerenser's, however, was open and Captain Bob was running his river tour boat out back on the Delaware. He's promoting winter fare like warm beverages and wieners, but the hottest dish in the joint was easily his girlfriend (forgive the Dashiell Hammett), keeping busy behind the counter.

Shopping -- Randolph & Main Opens in New Hope PA

New Hope PA shop Randolph & Main has opened at 42 North Main Street, and describes itself as "an eclectic blend of specialty foods, unique gifts and convenience items."

It's located on the ground floor of an old house, and the lighting, wall treatments and merchandising are generally top-notch and the owners charming, which offsets the not unusual New Hope identity crisis characterized by say, waiting to pay for your chocolate rugelach while the customer in front of you picks his Lotto number.

In fact, the store lists as its primary offerings "lottery, cigarettes, cold drinks, ice cream, snacks, greeting cards, unique gift items, specialty foods and custom baskets." Mostly what stood out were t-shirts, beverage coolers, several gifts and cards, some interesting gourmet items, ready-made specialty food baskets, and lots of coca-cola signs. The wraparound porch is a nice touch, the outdoor displays tasteful.

Where the store seems heading is toward a greater emphasis on specialty foods, a niche ill served in New Hope PA since the departure of Variete, but one also under pressure from grocery chains and large discounters like Trader Joe's and Costco.

Where the store excels is in its overall aesthetic and the engaging personalities of its owners David Diaz-Stuart and Paul Weinstein. When I visited last weekend, the shop was crowded, and the mood lively and interactive.

Edgy New Hope PA Clothing Store Thirteen Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

Owners Dave and Kevin provide a unique boutique experience in their tiny bohemian shop, located at 11A West Mechanic Street in downtown New Hope PA.

I walked in to find them serving hot cider to customers on a dreary Saturday afternoon. They were busy finding the most flattering size for a customer in the dressing room, followed by an alternate style. It's much like getting dressed to hit the town in your best friend's closet, with that invaluable second opinion -- honest, but kind. Their eyes light up when the right outfit has been found and the approval is contagious among other customers in the shop. "Oh yes! That's it" everyone agrees.

But the pair offer not only fashion advice, but also an eclectic, moderately priced collection of 70s and 80s inspired hats, sunglasses, rock n' roll tees, belts and earrings hanging from every conceivable spot. Vintage toys, lunchboxes, action figures, and kitschy gifts fill every other available cranny. Co-owner Kevin handcrafts a line of headbands and hair fasteners combining colorful flowers and feathers with miniature skulls -- a la the Mexican Day Of the Dead.

Small wonder Thirteen has survived and thrived these past five years. It has a trendy but friendly boutique feel with an eclectic fashion mix -- fabulous dresses and accessories for an evening out, funky knit hats in every color of the rainbow, cute animal-inspired knit head wear and gloves, and usually an Alf or Pee Wee Herman doll peering out from the depths of the store.

Now & Then You See It, Now & Then You Don't

Sure looks like recently resurrected Dead shop Now & Then is dead again, in the fastest store shuttering in New Hope PA since the engraved soap debacle at the Historical Society's floody barn near the Playhouse.

Although store lifespans in New Hope often approach that of the average fruit fly, this one may wind up being attributed to a difference among partners.

History tells us, however, this may well not be the last we see of Now & Again...it's a Dead store that just won't die.

Shopping: Scents of the Season at New Hope PA Favorite Strawberry Jam

Strawberry Jam opened in New Hope PA in August, 1973 according to the company website, "the store name having been chosen over a bottle of wine. New Hope at that time had two doctor's offices on Main Street, a pharmacy, one grocery run by the mayor and his family, and a photo shop. The post office on Bridge Street was an easy walk and where local gossip was exchanged. The local bank was at the intersection of Bridge and Main. It was there that we got our business loan of $10,00 on a handshake."

Since that time, the store has become a stalwart of the area gift shop scene, featuring top name brands in paper products, specialty foods, jewelry, candles, home accessories, CDs, bath products, and an excellent selection of unisex scents, including those by L'Artisan, Jean Laporte, Santa Maria Novella and many others.

One unique line rarely seen outside of New York City or Milan is the Etro stable of beautifully crafted fragrances. Etro's Messe de Minut eau de cologne, a reputed favorite of Sandra Bernhard, has core frankincense aroma reminiscent of ancient cathedral interiors that's perfect for fall. Etro's Lemon Sorbet is one of the best citrus blends available anywhere, a clean, light scent perfect for warmer months with a lemon base and hint of basil.

L'Artisan has many gorgeous olfactory blends as well, a favorite for fall being Premier Figuier, a fig-based delight, and Voleur de Roses, a blend of patchouli and roses that remains a cold weather favorite and one of the sexiest scents on Earth.

Another Strawberry Jam standard are the large bath soaps and other products by Claus Porto of Portugal. These are large, creamy sublime bath soaps that last so long the season will change before one is half-finished. All the aromas are excellent; of special interest are Vetyver and Tobacco Flower for the fall, Red Poppy to brighten the winter months, and Honeysuckle and Citron Verbena for late spring into summer.

There's much to like at Stawberry Jam, but for the true scent hound, the place is a goldmine.

Shopping -- Jake's Playhouse Opens in New Hope PA

Jake's Playhouse has taken the former Hot Plates retail space and opened its doors to the public.

I'd passed the storefront a few times, trying to discern what a picture of a dog named "Jake" and "fun for the whole family" adds up to, but the windows and signage aren't clear. So I decided to wander in.

It's an attractive, well-organized space filled with children's puzzles and board games, dog treats, and t-shirts and baseball caps with stick figures saying things like "life is good."

The owners already operate two stores in Lake Placid, NY; one called Jake Placid Doghouse and the other A Placid Life, which says it's "what's called a Life is good® Genuine Neighborhood Shoppe."

Never mind that New Hope PA already has a dog store called "Jake's" (Jake and Elwood's House of Chews is located at 122 S. Main Street), lots of t-shirts, and a "playhouse". Apparently, for this new "neighborhood shoppe", what's good in Lake Placid must be good for New Hope.

The store itself is spacious, well-lit, flows well, and the products appear to be of high-quality. Sales help was excellent, as it was at its predecessor.

I bought a yard-long beef chew stick for my dog for $3.00 (the dog was thrilled, BTW).

I hope the store resolves its identity crisis and does well. It's located on Main Street near Ferry Street in New Hope PA; my efforts online to find an exact address, phone number or contact proved fruitless.

Maybe they will fit in New Hope after all...

Peddler's Village Celebrates 38th Annual Apple Festival This Weekend

New Hope PA will be getting even more crowded this weekend as Peddler's Village in nearby Lahaska PA puts on its 38th Annual Apple Festival.

It all takes place Saturday, November 7, and Sunday, November 8, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, rain or shine. Free admission and parking.

Love fall fruit? Dig into favorite apple dishes from crisp apple fritters and warm apple pie to savory apple dumplings and freshly pressed apple cider. Peddler’s Village restaurants will feature delicious apple specialties all weekend.

One can also take home a bushel of green, golden or red delicious apples from local orchards, or watch authentic demonstrations of cider production in an antique cider press and cooking old-fashioned apple butter in a huge cauldron stirred by hand over an open fire.

Also enjoy the live musical entertainment, jugglers and stilt walkers on the Main Green, shop the handcrafted items at the 40 artisan booths on the Street Road Green, and cheer on the brave contestants in the traditional pie eating contests. Now and Then Shop Returns to New Hope PA

New Hope PA cultural icon Now and Then Shop is back and getting ready to celebrate its 40th year! It's just re-opened on Ney Alley steps up from the New Hope Candle Shop on South Main Street.

The place is crammed with posters, stickers, t-shirts and jewelry that reflect the Grateful Dead lifestyle. Owner Lynne Greene was in charge of the old place, too, and is a great source of local history and insight. She also still works at the Starbucks; feels those folks are treating her pretty good, too.

Partner Jessica adds dog toys, hippie artifacts and shishas to the mix, and is also a local celebrity in her own right.
